Winemaker
Julian Scott is MainBreak's Winemaker and the inspiration for developing these wines.
After getting thouroughly soaked in the cellar (you would be surprised how much red wine seems to attach itself head to foot during vintage) Jules likes to do the same in the surf and Main Break is his regular haunt. He is pictured right at Surfers Point with Main Break in the background. Julian jumps at "flying winemaker" postings overseas during the Australian Spring when there there's not so much happening in the Margaret River cellar. His favourite destinations are California and South Africa where he can get into the local surf, and his board is always part of the luggage.
Did we forget something? Ahh yes he's a pretty fine wine maker too with 11 major wine show trophies under his belt and too many gold medals to count (well thats after using up all your own fingers and toes plus your girlfriends). His trophys include 5 Royal Adelaide, 1 Boutique Wine Show, 1 Qantas WA Wine Show, and 4 Margaret River Wine Show.
For a committed surfer it may surprise that his qualifications are impecable with a Double Major in Chemistry [hons] and Environmental Science from Murdoch University and a subsequent Bachelor of Applied Science [Wine Science]… at Charles Sturt University graduating with Distinction.
Julian travels overseas in the quiet times to gain an insight into the world of wine. The 2004 and 2005 Vintages were completed at Bonny Doon Vineyards in Santa Cruz California. A likely destination considering the winery is full of all things whacky, wonderful and inquisitive [including Randall Graym]. In 2007, Julian travelled to Europe where he made Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay in the South-West France Gers Region and Grenache, Syrah and Tempranillo in the Calatayud Mountains in Spain. 2008 and again in 2009 sees him at Chalk Hill in California's Sanoma Valley.Previous appointments in Margearet River include Stella Bella, Alexandra Bridge Wines and Rosabrook Estate.
He is also currently Chief Winemaker for Hamelin Bay Wines in Margaret River and has been making their wines since 2000 vintage.
